What is burnout?  Burnout is a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.  Employees with burnout find that problems seem insurmountable, everything looks bleak, and it’s difficult to gather the energy to care, much less take action to help oneself.  Burnout is a gradual process. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it can creep up on you.

When was the last time you heard a major company executive say that customers should come second? Well, surprisingly Richard Branson of Virgin Atlantic is quoted as saying that very thing. However, the full quote goes, "Customers come second, employees first."

An issue facing almost all office workers at one time or another, that doesn’t get the attention it deserves, is workplace distractions.  The modern office is filled with them – from email dings, to more open office plans that mean you hear every conversation, to a cycle of never-ending meetings.  One study reported** that nearly 3 out of 4 workers admit they feel distracted on the job, with 16% claiming they’re almost always distracted.

I recently read a CNN article that discussed workplace loneliness. It was not a topic I thought was much of a problem. However, after reading some more on the issue of loneliness, I found out that America is currently in the midst of a “Loneliness Epidemic” and this epidemic has found its way into corporations across the country.

This “sage” quote from Rodney Dangerfield is an important reminder that we need to consciously consider how we personally demonstrate respect in the workplace, as well as how to incorporate respectful interactions into our company cultures.
